Lock hopeful scouting mission will pay dividends
Sam Lock is hopeful his scouting mission at Egham Town will pay dividends as Holyport FC prepare to journey over to The Runnymede Stadium on Saturday for another crucial Combined Counties Premier Division North fixture.
With Port not having a competitive game at the weekend, assistant boss Lock cast his eyes over Egham’s game with Berks County in the FA Vase. Derek Sweetman’s players, meanwhile, were able to have a muchneeded rest following a taxing league schedule.
They were due to play Reading City last Tuesday (December 7) but the game was postponed due to adverse weather conditions.
Prior to this, their form had been good, beating Spelthorne Sports and Wokingham & Emmbrook in consecutive matches before losing narrowly to promotion hopefuls Abbey
Rangers. The results bode well for the remainder of the campaign with the side now just a point adrift of Tadley Calleva and Wokingham at the bottom of the table.
“The boys had a good rest at the weekend while I went to watch
Egham play,” said Lock.
“Yeah, I guess you could say it was a scouting mission. They are a very good, very dynamic side. They also have some experienced players, like Dan Brown, who used to play for Maidenhead (United) – I know him very well.
“To be fair, we’re worrying less about the opposition now and more about ourselves. We used to spend a lot of time thinking about who we’re up against, but we’ve been really competitive recently and that’s because we’ve concentrated on ourselves more.”
Lock added: “The players have had a good break which was definitely needed. Playing Saturday, then Tuesday, then Saturday again has been quite intense because we’re trying to do everything to get a result.
“We will get back to training Tuesday and Thursday and go to Egham nice and positive.”
