Kelly is keen for Magpies to maximise their momentum
Maidenhead United striker Josh Kelly (left) is keen for the side to maximise the momentum they have after positive results against Bromley and Aldershot with tough looking home tests to come against Chesterfield (January 18) and new leaders FC Halifax Town (January 22).
The Magpies have dragged themselves out of their midseason slump in recent weeks with an impressive 1-0 victory over Bromley and Saturday’s hard-earned 1-1 draw at Aldershot Town.The results have lifted the side four points clear of the relegation zone, even though they’ve dropped a place to 20th due to Southend United’s 1-0 win at Weymouth.
Kelly, who fired the Magpies ahead on the stroke of half-time with a wonderful finish into the bottom corner, felt they were deserving of at least a point. There were further chances for them in the game, most notably for Kelly when he dragged the ball just wide of the post in the 58th minute, but Toby Edser marked his return from injury with the Shots’ equaliser in the 65th minute and the spoils were deservedly shared.
United will play a friendly with Brentford’s B side tomorrow evening (Tuesday) in a bid to keep themselves sharp for next week’s tricky looking games against Chesterfield and Halifax at York Road. United will go into both games as underdogs, but that was also the case for Bromley’s visit just after Christmas and Kelly is hoping they can upset the odds again to lift themselves further clear of the bottom three.
Speaking with Maidenhead United’s media officer Grace Scott after the draw with Aldershot, Kelly said: “We were a bit sluggish at times but then we got the goal, and we were doing well and were on the front foot.
“Then just one little mistake in the second half and we let them back in, but we deserved a point at least.
“We’ve had a bit of a blip and were struggling for a bit, but we’ve come through that now. We’ve got four tough games coming up so we’ll look forward to that, but it will be hard.
“Everyone seems to have come together and is putting in 100 per cent. It’s paying off but we need to keep at it and keep putting points on the board.”
The following week Maidenhead travel to promotion chasing Stockport County (January 25) and Wrexham (January 29), rounding off a difficult looking first month of the new year.
