Magpies let points slip through fingers

-

Alan Devonshire insisted Maidenhead United’s match against Aldershot Town ‘should have been over at half-time’ and conceded the Magpies let three points slip from their grasp due to tiredness in the second half.

Devonshire made a handful of changes from the team which drew 1-1 at Torquay United on Saturday, and notably handed a start to young Brad Keetch in midfield.

However, there were also noticeable signs of exhaustion from the Maidenhead players in the second half as fatigue from Saturday's long trip to Devon crept into their play.

Their first half performance was a plus point for the Magpies boss, however, and they picked up no further injuries that can't be run off in time for Saturday's game at Grimsby Town. The squad will take a few days rest before returning to training on Thursday.

“Yeah, we dominated, and the game should have been over at half-time, said Devonshire.

“We played very well but in the second half we probably started to get a bit tired from Saturday, the journey to Torquay.

“We changed the line-up, yeah, and it worked. But at the end of the day, we gave a goal back straight after we scored. That hurt us. Then we’ve gone back in front and listen, a draw is a draw as we’re coming to the end of the season now.

“For the injuries we’ve had, we’ve done well this year. The boys have been a credit. They’ve worked really hard and took on board what I’ve said. I’m pleased.”

Devonshire added: “We’ve still got another two games to play and hopefully we can finish on a high, against Grimsby and Notts County. We’ve got no injuries, touchwood, so we’ll be okay for Saturday. The players can have Tuesday off, and we’ll be back in training on Thursday.”
