Super seniors return to the tables after hiatus

Richard Cardin proves too strong for unseeded Yasir Mauthoor in final

-

After a three-year hiatus because of the COVID pandemic, the Cippenham Super 6 Senior 1 Star Open returned on Saturday with 53 players getting around the tables to battle for the singles title.

While most of the top ranked players comfortably made it through their preliminary groups without a hitch, there was the odd upset along the way before Richard

Cardin defeated the unseeded Yasir Mauthoor in the final.

In each of the nine preliminary groups, the top ranked player finished top of their second, with only one of them suffering a defeat, Vadym Krevs to Lee McHugh in group eight.

The fun really started in the knock-out stages where unseeded Mauthoor negotiated his way all the way to the final having finished second behind Eric Hammond in his group.

Jack Coleman was Mauthoor’s first victim in round one, then second seed Kevin

Nicholls felt the full force of his powerful attack in round two. Krevs was the next to be ousted, suffering his second day of the day, while Harry Law was downed in the semifinal, however, he did at least manage to take Mauthoor to the full distance of five games.

In the top half of the draw, top seed Carden was progressing through the stages, defeating Lee McHugh and Zayd Mauthoor with relative ease, however, he needed all his know-how to recover from two games down to beat third seed Jogenes Senorin in the semi-final.

Carden also fell behind in the final, but it acted as an alarm call, and he wrapped up the title against a tiring Yasir Mauthoor over four games.

Cippenham junior William Saint was the only local club player to feature in the main event. He won four of his five preliminary group matches but fell at the first knock out stage to the more experienced

Zayd Mauthoor.

The consolation event, for players finishing fourth, fifth and sixth in the preliminary groups, was won by Joe Britnell

who beat Stuart Vincent in the final.

The tournament was organised by Paul Baker and refereed by Graham Trimming.
