Huge crowds gather on historic weekend
Dozens of street parties and celebrations mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Maidenhead was in the jubilee spirit at the weekend as thousands took to the streets to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.
The four-day bank holiday gave communities across the town a chance to mark Her Majesty’s unprecedented milestone by partying with neighbours in the streets.
Roads were taken over by tables, barbecues, dancing and champagne as Maidonians – and fourlegged friends – made the most of the occasion.
Over in Windsor, the world’s eyes were watching as a beacon lighting and fireworks display kicked off the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, before the Long Walk was transformed into a Party in the Park and played host to a big lunch, with picnic tables stretching along the iconic route.
Villages and towns surrounding Maidenhead also hosted street parties including in Cookham, Burchetts Green and Fifield, while Marlow welcomed 7,000 people for its Party like the Queen event.
Jubilee celebrations also took place at Off The Tap (see p22) and Norden Farm (see p23) to mark the monarch’s seven decades.
Our photographers and reporters were out roaming the streets capturing the atmosphere as residents old and young toasted to Her Majesty.
The Queen said in a statement she was ‘humbled and deeply touched’ that so many took to the streets to mark her jubilee, adding she has been ‘inspired by the kindness, joy and kinship’.
To mark the occasion, this week’s Advertiser contains an eight-page supplement packed with photos from the weekend’s celebrations.
