Sports oust Burnham on penalty kicks

-

Penalties were needed to separate Burnham and Easington Sports in the FA Cup extra-preliminary round on Tuesday night, with Ben Murray’s (below) unfortunate Blues exiting the competition. Two 90-minute matches and a 30-minute period of extra-time had failed to deliver a winner, so the tie was settled on spot-kicks, with Sports winning the shoot-out 5-4 on their own turf.

Chances were at a premium in Tuesday’s replay, with neither side able to find the back of the net.

Burnham will be disappointed they didn't progress through at the first time of asking at the 1878 Stadium on Saturday.

Rhys Harper fired the home side in front in the early stages and the Blues also struck the foot of the post from a free kick as they looked to build on their advantage, however, Easington levelled matters with five minutes to play.

Easington will play Roman Glass St George FC in the preliminary round of the competition on Saturday, August 20.

For Burnham, attention now switches to the side's first league game of the season at Hilltop FC on Saturday, 3pm kickoff. They'll follow that up with a home game against Egham Town on Wednesday evening.
