Windsor's FA Cup run is short-lived

-

Windsor’s run in this season's FA Cup was short-lived as they bowed out of the competition at the extra-preliminary round stage following a 20 defeat to Royal Wootton Bassett Town in Tuesday night’s replay.

The side’s had played out a 1-1 draw in Wiltshire on Saturday, where Tyler Robinson headed in a late equaliser from Ben Hall's cross to salvage a replay for the Royalists.

Bailey Gallagher had earlier turned in Alfie Presley’s cross to put the hosts in front, but Bassett weren’t able to see out the game.

At a sunny Stag Meadow on Tuesday evening, they made no such mistake, claiming victory and a place in the preliminary round of the competition for a third successive season. It's the first time in the club’s history that has been achieved.

The replay was hardfought, with Mick Woodham's Royalists going close on several occasions, however, Bassett were able to hang onto the lead given to them by Josh Elms in the 42nd minute.

They doubled their advantage late on, when Presley found the net in the 82nd minute, and after that there was no route back for Windsor.

Another tough test from the Combined Counties Premier Division North lies in wait for Bassett, with the Wiltshire side set to host Reading City in the preliminary round.
