Royalists are rock bottom while Port pick up two points

-

Windsor are sitting rock bottom of the Combined Counties Premier Division North table having lost their first two games.

On Saturday, the Royalists were beaten 5-1 at Stag Meadow by a high-flying Ascot United. Jamie Tompkins’ men had to come from behind after James Rogers-Oben headed the hosts in front with 11 minutes on the clock.

Brendan Matthew equalised five minutes later before ex-Holyport man Usman Lalustani and former Marlow player Marcus Mealing set up Matthew for a second goal.

Lalustani had an effort deflected in and Jay Welch’s strike from distance hit the back of the net next to make the score 4-1 at half-time.

The Royalists improved after the break but, after squandering a couple of good chances, Matthew secured his hat-trick and rounded off a fine opening day for the Yellamen in the 92nd minute.

Speaking after his side’s defeat, manager Mick Woodham said: “The Ascot result will not define our season but I am frustrated with the manner of how we concede easy possession which in turn leads to us conceding cheap goals.

“Teams like Ascot do not need any encouragement when it comes to attacking their opponents and we gave them a helping hand with at least three of the goals. We are a team searching for stability in every area of the pitch, the group is young and the need for leadership, direction and an identity is where we are working hard to improve on.”

On Tuesday night, Windsor fell to a 3-2 defeat to Harefield United. Luke Appleton and Tyler Robinson were on target for the Royalists.

Flackwell Heath are perched 10 places above in the division after they rectified their 4-1 defeat to Egham Town at the weekend with a 4-1 victory of their own on Tuesday evening against Spelthorne Sports at Wilks Park.

Reece Cameron, Callum Bunting, captain Jamie Essex, and Lucas Surpano were all on the scoresheet against the Spelly.

Sam Lock’s Holyport are in 12th place having drawn 1-1 against Harefield United on Saturday and Chalfont St Peter earlier this week.

Elsewhere in the division, Burnham are 19th owed to their 4-1 loss at Hilltop and were due to face Egham Town last night (Wednesday).

After kicking off their Isthmian League South Central Division campaign with an entertaining 4-3 victory over Walton & Hersham on Saturday, Marlow frustratingly drew 1-1 with Thatcham Town.

The Blues almost had all three points but Nathan Jones spoiled the party with a 90th minute equaliser.
