Banshees hold taster for wheelchair rugby players

-

The Berkshire Banshees wheelchair rugby club held a free taster day for prospective new members at its base at Reading Blue Coat School in Sonning last month.

The CH Rugby Ltd club, which offers rugby for people with physical impairments and learning difficulties, established an adult team several years ago, and membership numbers have gone from strength to strength in recent years, with 17 players now registered.

However, it’s also the goal of the club’s committee to launch a junior team, for ages eight to

16, which they hope will provide a pathway into the adult set up.

To generate interest in the sport, CH Rugby has delivered rugby sessions in mainstream and

SEND schools (for pupils with special educational needs) across Berkshire and enough interest was generated to run a free taster session over the summer in Sonning. On the day, players and their families and friends were able to play alongside each other and give wheelchair rugby a go.

The club aims to offer more of these sessions to children and young adults over the coming months.

Craig Hunter, lead coach, said: “It was brilliant to run the first taster session for the students who enjoyed the school sessions and for them to show their parents and siblings how good they were.

“We are keen to hear from parents and students who would be interested in attending free taster sessions in the future.”

Sally Sycha, a CH Rugby coach, and player/coach from Berkshire Banshees’ adult team, added: “I was delighted to help deliver this event especially as my son was also taking part – playing a sport I love, and I was able to play alongside him.”
