The journey home
Nation’s final farewell to Her Majesty before she is laid to rest in Windsor
Her Majesty’s final journey began this week as tens of thousands of people lined the streets to pay their respects.
The Queen’s coffin was transported from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall yesterday (Wednesday) where she will lie in state ahead of Monday’s state funeral at Westminster Abbey.
Following the service, Her Majesty will be taken to Windsor, where she will be committed at her final resting place in St George’s Chapel.
As the nation prepares to say goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II after her 70-year reign, this week’s commemorative issue of the Advertiser looks back at her lifetime of service and the historic events of the past week.
Tributes have been paid by political figures and faith leaders in the borough, while mourners made their way to Windsor to lay down flowers and reflect on the Queen’s remarkable life.
The Advertiser has also taken a look through the archives at how we reported
Her Majesty’s Accession and Coronation, as well as her visits to the Maidenhead area through the years.
One of her final public engagements was at Thames Hospice in Bray in July, leaving the charity with ‘wonderful memories’.
Meanwhile, huge crowds were in Windsor to see the Royal Borough proclaim a new King in the shadow of the castle on Sunday.
