Journey to final resting place
Windsor: Royal coffin will proceed to St George’s Chapel
The Queen’s coffin will make its final journey in a procession along The Long Walk before the monarch is laid to rest on Monday.
The state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II will be held at Westminster Abbey,
London, at 11am with the Government announcing a bank holiday to allow people to pay their respects.
Ahead of Monday’s funeral, the Queen will lie in state in Westminster Hall to give the public the opportunity to bid farewell.
The Queen’s coffin has been on a near week-long journey since her death at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday, September 8.
It arrived by road to Buckingham Palace on Tuesday to rest in The Bow Room before travelling in procession on a gun carriage of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery to the Palace of Westminster on Wednesday.
Following Monday’s state funeral, the coffin will travel in procession from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch before making its final journey to Windsor.
The last leg will see the state hearse travel to St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, via the Long Walk, where a committal service will take place.
The leader of Windsor and Maidenhead council said the local authority was ‘honoured and humbled’ that the service was taking place in the borough.
Councillor Andrew Johnson said: “It will be an historic and moving moment for us all to remember and pay our respects to the Queen, reflect on her lasting legacy and on her long and close association with the Royal Borough and Windsor in particular, of which we’re extremely proud.”
The committal service will be private but is set to be televised.
