Close, entertaining, matches the hallmark of finals day
Desborough Bowls Club and Maidenhead Town Bowls Club held their finals days over the past couple of weekends, marking the end of their outdoor season.
Town’s finals were staged over the weekend, with Tim Eales and Ann Roberts emerging triumphant in the Mixed Pairs event.
In the Mixed Two Wood Triples, Paul Hutchinson, Phil Markwell and Geoff Motley took victory, while Kay Dilkes lifted the Ladies Ena Head Cup.
Sophie Lack won the Ladies Bailey Rose Bowl and Carole Williams was the Ladies Novice champion.
In the Ladies Drawn Pairs, Carol van Noorden and Sue Hutchinson claimed victory while the Ladies Fred Thatcher Cup was won by Kay Dilkes, Sue Page, and Sue Hutchinson.
Sophie Lack also won the Ladies Championship.
In the Men's Handicap Pairs there was a win for Tony Stuart and Steve Tegg, while Steve Tegg won the Men’s Novice event.
Tony Stuart won the Men’s Seniors event and Tim Eales the Men’s Handicap Singles.
The Men’s Championship was won by Jeff Beal.
Prize giving will take place prior to the club’s AGM in November.
Finally, in the men’s county double fours final in Tilehurst, Maidenhead Town’s team were beaten by Hagbourne in an entertaining contest.
Desborough’s finals day also saw some very close and entertaining matches.
Reigning champion, Gina Braddock, was always in control as she beat Kim Barao 21-11 to take the Ladies Championship title.
The Novice Singles was won by Helen Payne after a 21-15 victory over Tonie Philpott.
Angie Isaac showed her experience to come from behind for a 21-16 win over Sally Lane in the Handicap Singles final. There were also wins for Linda Davies over Linda Harvey (21-15) in the over 70s final.
Nicola Jones and Tonie Philpott got the better of Angie Isaac and Kim Barao in a fascinating tussle in the Nominated Pairs, winning 23-19
Marl Essex won the men’s championship title after a dominant 21-6 win over Russell Dale, while Bob Forster’s greater consistency saw him beat Raul Patel 21-11 in the Novices Singles final.
Bob then repeated the trick to beat Keith Roper 219 in the Handicap Singles.
Finally, in the Nominated Pairs, last year’s losing finalists, Tony Buckley and Mike Whittingham beat Mark Harris and Paul Patel 29-9.
