Magpies fail to hit the net once again
Maidenhead United FC: United have scored just six goals all season
For the fifth time this season, Maidenhead United failed to find the net as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Boreham Wood on Tuesday evening.
The Magpies have been struggling to find the net on a consistent basis all season and have managed only six goals from their eight matches so far - with half of those coming in the 3-2 win over Scunthorpe United.
United have bolstered their attacking options in recent weeks, bringing in the former Southend United winger, Ashley NathanielGeorge, but right at this moment they're struggling to turn chances into goals.
Saturday's game at Wrexham was postponed as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, but the National League gave the go-ahead for matches to resume from Monday and the Magpies made the short trip to Meadow Park aiming to build on an encouraging display in their last outing, a 1-1 home draw against FC Halifax Town. This they surely would have done had they managed to take one of the very presentable
chances which fell their way on the night.
That said, Boreham Wood missed a first half penalty, with Tyrone Marsh blazing his spot kick over the bar, before Danny Elliott struck Wood's second half winner.
The first half was relatively even, with both sides threatening to break the deadlock. Will Evans was thwarted by Dan Gyollai, while Charlee Adams forced exteammate Nathan Ashmore into a save as the half progressed. Ryan
Upward also went close for the Magpies with an effort that was blocked behind for a corner while Koby Arthur saw his shot saved by Ashmore after turning his marker and creating space on the edge of the area.
Wood will feel they should have taken the lead when Alan Massey was adjudged by referee Robert Massey-Ellis to have fouled his man in the box, but Marsh skied his spot kick, and the sides went in level at the break.
It didn't take the hosts long to break the deadlock after the interval however, with Elliott finishing off an intricate move, slotting the ball beyond Gyollai.
United created a flurry of late chances to get what would have been a deserved leveller, the best of them falling to substitute Reece Smith, whose effort was well saved by Ashmore. Upward crashed another effort over the bar in the dying minutes.
United now have two home games to make amends, against Woking on Saturday (September 17), and Gateshead on Saturday, September 24, the latter will also be televised on BT Sport.
