Benyon nets late winner before dislocating his shoulder

-

Slough Town have moved to within striking distance of the National League South play-off places after Elliot Benyon swept home a late winner against Taunton Town at Arbour Park on Tuesday evening.

For much of a very soggy evening it appeared the Rebels would be frustrated by Taunton's resolute defence, but with just nine minutes remaining on the clock, Benyon found space at the back post to turn home Lee Togwell’s brilliant cross on the volley.

The striker was later substituted after suffering a dislocated shoulder, putting a dampener on an otherwise encouraging evening.

Performances have been a little up and down so far this season - and sometimes in the same game - but they've shown character to grind out results. This win was their fourth in five league games and moves them up to ninth in the table. As joint manager Jon Underwood last week, they must be doing something right.

Both sides struggled to impose themselves in the early stages, and there was little of goalmouth action until the 15th minute, when Taunton's Dave Sims-Burgess blazed over from just a few yards out. The visitors saw a few more speculative efforts flash harmlessly wide before the hosts had their first real sight of goal in the 35th minute. Ben Harris flicked the ball on for Johnny Goddard, but he couldn't get a clean connection on the shot and the keeper saved. A second big chance followed for the home side a few minutes later, but Aaron Kuhl's goal bound strike was unintentionally blocked by Benyon and Taunton cleared the danger.

Harris saw a couple of decent chances come and go midway through the second half. In the 51st minute he was able to divert Matt Lench's corner goal wards, but the keeper made a comfortable save; then on the hour mark, Lench chipped a lovely ball into the middle, but Harris' header sailed wide.

However, the home side's hard work paid off in the 81st minute when Benyon gave the Taunton defence the slip to fire home emphatically at the far post.

Slough will go in search of a third straight win in all competitions when they host league rivals Worthing in the

second qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday. Worthing currently sit third in the table after picking up their fifth win of the season with a 3-2 victory over Cheshunt on Tuesday.
