Peace, protection and, yes, self-governance
Perhaps it is the onset of autumnal harvests which persuades MDG to repeat the hoary old chestnut that the EU governs its member countries (Viewpoint, September 15).
The 27 states have their own laws and regulations, and each country governs itself.
There is a degree of protection for industries and agriculture, as stated, and most would view that setting of high standards as a positive, given the lack of regard for consumers in other countries, including the US and, as seems likely under the Truss administration, the UK.
MDG’s brief contribution omits the myriad benefits of EU membership; perhaps the most important one is the original driver for the association of states all those decades ago, and that is peace between the countries of Europe, ever ready to go to war with each other over something.
Contemplating the events in the east of the continent in 2022, that is surely something worth having.
