Ed left shaking his head after Magpies collapse

Maidenhead United Women: United beaten 5-0 by home side Cardiff City Ladies

-

Manager Ed Jackson-Sankey bemoaned what he felt was another ‘questionable’ penalty decision against his Maidenhead United Women side, which changed the course of their match at leaders Cardiff City Ladies on Sunday afternoon.

A spot kick awarded at the end of the first half gave the hosts the lead and the home side – who had already scored an impressive 27 goals from their previous four FA Women’s National League games this season – ran in another four goals in the second half. Remarkably, the final 5-0 score line represented City’s joint-narrowest margin of victory in their 2022/23 League campaign so far.

Jackson-Sankey had seen a similarly harsh penalty kick change the course of the Magpies FAWNL Cup tie at Exeter City the previous weekend and he admitted to ‘mixed feelings’ after the Cardiff game.

Speaking afterwards Ed reflected: “First half we were tactically outstanding and defended so incredibly well against top opposition and we were able to create promising situations on the counter. The disappointment comes from collapsing in the way we did in the second half and I have to take responsibility there for not addressing the drop in performance right away. We’ll go away and work hard again this week and be ready to go this weekend.”

The Magpies host their first home fixture of the season this Sunday, October 9 when they host Exeter in a League fixture at York Road.

Kick off will be at 2pm and admission will be £5 for adults, £3 concessions and MUFC season ticket holders will be admitted Free of charge. Meanwhile, United have been drawn away from home in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup and will take on Fulham at Motspur Park on Sunday, October 23.
