1972: The pottery work of arty children at Courthouse School in Maidenhead was on display.
Youngsters had been studying the different styles of buildings in the area and produced clay houses, which were put proudly on display at the school entrance hall.
1987: Football commentators and stars joined forces to help a Bucks pensioner who was robbed of her savings in her home.
England manager Bobby Robson was among the famous faces at the Crest Hotel in Maidenhead to help raise more than £700 for the 82-year-old.
1992: Ramblers remembered one of their own in Taplow by dedicating a landscaped viewpoint in his memory. Peter Nevell was founder-president of the East Berks Ramblers Association and had passed away four years prior. His widow Molly had travelled from Warwick for the occasion, with the memorial taking two years to complete.
1992: British rowing sensation Steve Redgrave officially opened the Maidenhead Advertiser stand at Marlow FC’s Oak Tree Road ground. The Olympic gold medallist was joined by Gerald Baylis, Advertiser chairman, for the unveiling before the Blues’ clash
with top-of-the-table Enfield.
1992: Pupils at Cookham Rise School learned about the trials and tribulations of Victorian washdays. Using an old wooden washboard and a grated bar of soap, youngsters were transported back to the mid-1800s as part of a science study into the era.
1997: The Victorian Guards Club bridge was officially reopened by the mayor Cllr Eric Wiles.
The bridge was closed to the public in 1995 because it was in a dangerous condition but was ‘restored to its former beauty’ at a ribbon cutting ceremony.
“I think the people who live in the locality really appreciate it. It is nice to see a bit of civic pride,” Cllr Wiles said.
1997: Maidenhead’s Rainbow Guides held a get-together with the help of new MP Theresa May.
A total of 54 girls from Maidenhead, Furze Platt, Cookham, Holyport and Woodlands Park were at Wessex Junior School for a 10th birthday bash.
