Simone O’Brien and Megan Halfacree were both clutching a match ball at full-time on Sunday following their outstanding hat-tricks in Maidenhead United’s 7-0 win over Woodley United in the county cup.
Two direct free-kicks from Halfacree gave the Magpies a 2-0 lead at halftime and, following manager Ed Jackson-Sankey’s team talk, she helped the side convincingly extend their advantage.
Halfacree first turned provider in the 46th minute, pulling the ball back for Natalie Cowell whose shot across goal was tapped in by O’Brien, and four minutes later, Halfacree scored another set piece.
O’Brien scored her second of the game – the Magpies’ fifth – before the hour mark before new signing Anja Harper had her say in the goalfest with a superb strike.
Following a foul on Halfacree, O’Brien stepped up to take the free-kick and confidently dispatched it to claim her hat-trick in the 88th minute.
Speaking with media officer Neil Maskell at full-time, Halfacree said: “We done some set piece practice on Thursday which definitely gave me the confidence to step up and score. I am glad I could do it, three times.”
O’Brien added: “Meg was really kind to give me the opportunity on a free kick aswell so that rounded my hat-trick off.”
