Assistant boss hoping for a lucrative FA Cup run

-

Ryan Peters believes the FA Cup could be massive for Maidenhead United this season from a financial point of view, as he seeks to guide the club through a few more rounds of the competition.

The Magpies made a perfect start in that quest on Saturday, defeating National League South side Eastbourne Borough 2-1 at York Road, and, while the firstround draw didn't offer up the

'big boy' team Peters was hoping for, a home game against Dagenham & Redbridge does at least give the Magpies a realistic chance to progress to the second round for the first time in 136 years.

Should they manage to end that hoodoo by putting out the Daggers on home soil, it would leave them one match, and one win from a potentially lucrative third round draw against one of the 'really big boys' from the Premier League.

Speaking on Saturday afternoon to Maidenhead's media officer Grace Scott and assistant

Hamza Peters speculated on what a good cup run would mean to Maidenhead and reflected on their solid win over Eastbourne.

He said: “We were efficient. We weren’t necessarily at our best, but the idea was to make this place a fortress and make sure we’re in the hat for the next round which is what we’ve done.

“We’ve also got a manager who has won the FA Cup so it’s a chance for us to look forward to that and pit our wits against some of the bigger teams.

“Financially, the FA Cup is massive. It can do a lot for this club, and we warrant it so we have to try and progress through as many rounds as we can.

“Port Vale has been the furthest we’ve gone, getting a replay in the first round. We have to make sure we try and go past that.

“Anyone in the leagues above is going to a big boy to us. It’s a chance for us, managerial staff, to pit our wits against them and see what we’re like.

“It’s also a chance for the boys to see what their ability is like compared to a league above.”
