Townsend says team don’t need to push panic button

-

In his analysis of Maidenhead’s loss to Wimbledon at the weekend, captain Jamie Townsend (above) said it is not time to ‘push the panic button’ and is focused on ensuring every player comes together and supports one another in training.

Saturday marked Maids’ third defeat of the season and their second where they’ve lost by more than 21 points. It’s not that the Dons were hugely superior to their hosts, it’s just that they stuck to their game plan, Townsend believes.

Maidenhead haven’t been plunged into the depths of the Regional 1 South Central either following the result, but the team should regard their clash with 10th-placed Brighton this Saturday as a must win fixture, the skipper added.

“We knew what Wimbledon were going to bring and their game plan wasn’t complicated,” said Townsend. “Quite a few teams at this level have a very similar game plan. It’s all about big boys running hard and whether you can stop them.

“Injuries didn’t help us today, losing two backs in the first half really doesn’t help. I think we just went off script and didn’t stick to our game plan to be honest.

“But, we will regroup at training on Tuesday and work on things together. We’ve got some good players coming back from injury as well hopefully in the next couple of weeks. We’ve just got to stick together.”

Townsend added: “We’re still up there in the league. We’ve got a few winnable games before the new year as well so I don’t think it’s time to push the panic button.”
