Peters concedes Maidenhead were ‘disappointing’

-

Maidenhead United’s recent record at Barnet is hardly one to write home about, and assistant boss Ryan Peters conceded they once again disappointed in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at The Hive. Having gone four matches unbeaten in all competitions, United came into the clash with plenty of confidence, but there was a drop off in performance levels, particularly in the first half. And, having fought their way back into the contest with Charlee Adams levelling matters from the penalty spot, they conceded a sloppy late goal to substitute Marvin Armstrong and came away from Barnet with yet another defeat.

Barnet’s winner was particularly galling as it came at a time when Maidenhead looked like they might just turn the match on its head and grab a winner themselves.

Talking to Maidenhead's media officer, Grace Scott, after the final whistle, Peters said: “It was a disappointing defeat and a disappointing performance. But, when you manage to get back into the game with 10/15 minutes left, you expect to see it out.

“We didn’t and it was a terrible second goal to give away, but we’ve got to put it to one side because we’ve got another game on Tuesday.

“The last four games have been really impressive, but performance wise and results, so to see that first half we weren't happy about. We needed to step up the tempo which we did, and managed to win the penalty, but an uncharacteristic mistake led to another goal which is not like us.

“We need the boys to know we can’t drop our levels like we did, but this game is gone now. We’re going to carry on training, we’re not going to be light in our sessions and we have built up our squad. We can afford to take some players out and bring others in, which we’ll have to do.”

This was an improvement on last season’s 3-0 defeat at The Hive, but Barnet is far from a happy hunting ground for the Magpies. They’ve never beaten them in the National League and have lost on each of their five trips here, managing just one goal in the process. In fact, the Magpies’ overall record against the Bees is pretty dreadful. They've won just two of their 19 competitive matches against them, and you have to go back to November 1964 for the last time United claimed a victory, a 4-2 home win in the Athenian League.
