Goals in short supply during Huish Park stalemate

-

Each week, we will get a Maidenhead United supporter to reflect on the state of play with the Magpies. This week, Robert Peck reflects on the Magpies' stalemate with Yeovil Town.

It was little ado about nothing at the end of a rather predictable goalless draw at Huish Park. This was the Magpies third successive nought-nought at this venue, a ground at which they have never lost. But it was the form guide which had the most blatant hint of what was to come.

Yeovil had scored just once in their last six matches before this match, the Magpies themselves hitting the net just the one time in their most recent four.

United had the better of the chances, particularly in the first half.

Shot-shy in recent games, both Kane Ferdinand and Koby Arthur hit the target early on and warmed the gloves of Grant Smith for the hosts who looked shaky early on.

Hard-working Emile Acquah had a shot deflected wide and was later denied by Smith whilst the struggling home side were tidy enough in possession but with all the credible threat of a pensioner on tramadol.

The second period continued with Maidenhead on top. Kane Ferdinand flicked a point blank header straight at Smith as a freekick was not cleared and then a fizzing ball across the six yard box from Sam Beckwith was begging for the merest touch into the back of the net.

The introduction of the lively Oluwabori from the

bench suddenly injected some urgency for the hosts whose manager Mark Cooper was in the home dug out for the first time. But, although the home side ended strongly, the fact remained that neither Dan Gyollai or Grant Smith had a strenuous save to make.

The full time whistle

brought silence from a crowd of a little under 2,000 spectators.

No jeers, no cheers, no real applause for two sides who showed plenty of effort but little quality.

Results elsewhere made this a better point for Maidenhead than Yeovil. But the goals must come soon.
