Holyport have Montpelier Villa in their sights after painful league defeat

-

Sam Lock has told Holyport's players to use the pain of Saturday's 3-1 defeat against Wembley to inspire them toward an improved performance in Saturday's FA Vase second round tie at Montpelier Villa.

There were plenty of positives for Lock to take from Saturday's display, but ultimately, they were undone by an ill-disciplined defensive display.

Matteo Giacobbe, who was superb in the side's 2-0 defeat to Ascot United the previous week, conceded three times, turning a first half corner onto

the cross bar before it was deflected in before Davante Adams and Ben Lawson-Hatch both beat him on Wembley counter attacks.

Ash Hunt scored his eighth goal of the season to bring Holyport back into contention and had a chance for his ninth from the penalty spot late on, only to be denied by Wembley keeper Charlie Wealands.

Lock spoke to UCFB Student Luca Salmasi afterwards: “I think that if you concede three goals you don’t deserve to take anything from the game. I think that we performed fairly well at times, we created lots of opportunities to score, but we just weren’t clinical enough in front of goal and if you don’t take your opportunities, you give the opposition confidence and that's what we did.

“Ash scores goals, he'll always have an opportunity to score, and he had two or three opportunities today. Ash said it as he came off the pitch, he could have got a few more today. That's the level he sets himself.

“I expect today to be forgotten and put behind us. I think that you take the positives out of it, but also the hurt and the feeling of losing a game of football.

“Next week is a massive opportunity for the boys and the club and they know they need to raise their game. I expect them to do that. I think as a group we have had a lot of changes, people coming in and out for one reason or another this month. That's just been the way it is. Players are getting used to one another, but there are some talented boys there. Ultimately, what I want to see (from them) is a clean sheet. Last week at Ascot my keeper made lots of brilliant saves and they deservedly beat us, this week they had three attempts on goal and have scored all three, that’s the difference.”
