- RAY WILLIAMS Secretary, Royal British Legion, Maidenhead branch

At the conclusion of the monthly meeting of the Maidenhead branch of the Royal British Legion on Friday, October 21, our 88-yearold president set off for his car, parked in Grove Road car park.

As usual, he declined the offer of assistance to one who, in his late eighties, was not as agile as in his youth.

Some half an hour later, members enjoying a chat and a drink were interrupted by a young lady who enquired if a ‘Ray’ was present.

On being informed that I was a ‘Ray’ she told us that our president had fallen in the car park, sustaining, as it turned out, a broken hip and had been asking for my assistance.

We swiftly made our way to the scene of the accident where two young men were holding umbrellas over our president to shield him from the torrential downpour.

An ambulance had been requested but did not arrive for almost two-and-a-half hours.

The reason for this letter is to highlight the dedication and goodwill shown by the oft criticised members of the younger generation.

Not only did Sophie, Matt and Charlie initially tend to the injured gentleman they remained with him throughout his painful wait, while one drove to his house to bring the president’s wife to the scene and then took her home after the ambulance had depar ted.

As well as driving the president’s car home afterwards to avoid excess parking fees!

Our Legion branch will be thanking these excellent young people in our own way but we feel that it is important that their Good Samaritan act is more widely publicised!
