Magpies forced to dig deep but claim deserved victory

-

There was an element of fortune to Maidenhead United’s opener at Aldershot Town on Saturday, with Remy Clerima admitting afterwards he was trying to pick out Emile Acquah with a cross that deceived Luca AshbyHammond and rolled into the net.

But there was nothing fortunate about the quality of Maidenhead’s performance as the Magpies recorded their first win at Aldershot in 25 years.

After his cross-come shot picked out the bottom corner, United flew into an early 2-0 lead when Will De Havilland headed home firmly from the excellent Reece Smith’s corner, and the visitors were so firmly in control they could and should have pulled further ahead before half-time.

Nerves must have been frayed on the visiting bench when Inih Effiong pulled a goal back early in the second half, but United’s defence stood strong under considerable second half pressure from the hosts.

Reflecting on an excellent away win, United’s third on their travels this season, goal scorer Clerima told Maidenhead United’s media officer Grace Scott: “We got what we deserved for sure.

“We started really well. Scored two goals pretty quickly, we controlled the game in the first half. Coming into the second half, we knew we had to keep a clean sheet to win the game. We conceded one goal, made it hard for ourselves but we dug in, defended well and we got the three points. It was well deserved.

On his opening goal he added: “Listen, I was going to cross it, but it went in, and a goal is a goal.

“I enjoy it (the advances midfield position), I’m learning more and more. I’m not naturally a forward player but I’m getting to enjoy it more and more and learn. I’ve got to try and do the best in every position. I love it.

The supporters are amazing, we need them in a game, win or lose we need them. They give us a lift and it’s important. They don’t want to go home, it’s amazing, I love it, thank you to them.”
