There are no plans to reopen the upper floors of the Broadway car park, according to a senior councillor, although parking provisions within Maidenhead will be strengthened with the opening of Vicus Way in the coming weeks.

The news came ahead of Tuesday night’s full council meeting, which saw the Royal Borough’s elected representatives convene at Maidenhead Town Hall.

Level 5 and above in the Broadway car park, next to the Nicholsons Centre, has been closed since August amid concerns over antisocial behaviour on the site.

The car park is set for demolition in the future along with the Nicholsons Centre itself; however, Cllr Phil Haseler (Con, Cox Green)

said there is ‘sufficient parking capacity within Hines Meadow’ to cover the shortfall.

In his written response to a question from Cllr Gurch Singh (Lib Dem, St Mary’s), the lead member for parking added: “[The shortfall] will be strengthened by the opening of Vicus Way Multi Story Car Park for daily parking in mid-December 2022.”

At the meeting, Cllr Singh asked a supplementary question regarding whether, like Broadway, Vicus Way would be free on Sundays, although Cllr Haseler responded by saying that a decision had not yet been made.

An update on refugees from the Russian invasion of Ukraine has also been provided by Cllr Ross McWilliams (Con, Cox Green) following a question from Cllr Helen Price (tBFI, Clewer and Dedworth East).

“There are currently 144 host families, with a total of 318 guests,” said the lead member for housing opportunity.

Cllr McWilliams added that since the launch of the scheme, 34 households have left their original hosts with 18 returning to Ukraine.

In addition, five relationships between hosts and guests have broken down, three households have been rematched and eight have been supported into longer term private rented accommodation.
