1972: BBC sports personality Frank Bough presented trophies and awards at a special Gordon School prize day – for it was the last one that involved the whole school.
With comprehensive education due to begin in Maidenhead the following September, the school was set to stop taking in first formers, with third year pupils also due to be transferred to other schools in preparation for external examinations.
1982: Maidenhead Bus Station was set to welcome its last bus ahead of its closure.
Operator Alder Valley was preparing to sell the bus station site in the hope of reducing its operating deficit, but the travel office and inspectors’ office remained open at the time.
Bridge Avenue remained the principal stopping point for buses and coaches, with six stands along
the west side of the road.
1987: Maidenhead United players and officials showed off their new kit, sponsored by the Nationwide Anglia Building Society.
The first team and reserves sported a new white strip, while the youth team wore black and white stripes.
1992: A hat day was just one of the many things in store for pupils of Altwood School during their book week. The week featured performances focused on Chaucer and Shakespeare, along with writing workshops and talks about the art of storytelling.
1997: A vast crowd filled the streets of Maidenhead town centre to witness the illumination of the Christmas lights.
Children scrabbled for the best possible vantage point to see Father Christmas, while six-yearold Kelly Philps had the honour of switching on the lights.
1997: Pupils and staff at Cox Green School celebrated success at their annual presentation evening.
The school had good cause to celebrate – it had just been placed fifth in a ranking of the 36 mixed comprehensive schools in Berkshire.
