Faithful take to the streets
Maidenhead: Walk of Witness held on Good Friday
More than 200 people proceeded through Maidenhead town centre on Good Friday in the annual Walk of Witness.
Representatives of 10 different churches in town took part in the walk, organised by Churches Together in Maidenhead.
The procession started at 11am in Providence Place next to Sainsbury’s and made its way through the town singing songs and hymns and listening to dramatic re-enactments.
This year Bible readings were taken from the gospel of Matthew, re-telling the events of Jesus’ trial and crucifixion.
Readers included Marlene Bryant from St Peter’s Church, Claire Samber from St Joseph’s Church, Jachin Aghoghovbia from St Mary’s
Church, and Jeanette Lock from All Saints Church.
The route took walkers through Market Street and along the length of the High Street.
The crowd gathered at stops outside Boots and Wilko to hear dramatic reenactments delivered by James Aidan from St Edmund Campion Catholic Church and Rev Amanda Redwood from Boyn Hill Baptist Church.
Prayers were led by Rev John Drake from St Mary’s Church and Rev David Downing from the United Reformed Church, who is chair of Churches Together.
Thanks were given to the organising team at St Mary’s Church, the Salvation Army for providing the music, Maidenhead Street Angels for providing stewards, Lixi Chivas for sign language and the High Street Methodist Church for providing refreshments after the walk.
Organiser Richard Crane said: “This year’s Walk of Witness was a great reminder of why Christians call it Good Friday. It was a delight to gather in the sunshine with churches across the town, representing both the diversity and unity of the church.
“We remembered God’s great sacrifice, which brings believers back into relationship with Him forever.
“The Easter message is perhaps less well known than in previous generations, so we pray this event was a blessing to the town.”
