Maidenhead United FC: Aaron Jarvis and Frank Nouble are on

-

Maidenhead United 1, Torquay United 3 Torquay United made it four National League wins in a row with a deserved victory against Maidenhead United on Easter Monday.

At a sunny but rain-soaked York Road, striker Aaron Jarvis netted his 15th goal of the season to put the Gulls in the ascendancy on the stroke of half-time.

Frank Nouble was on target swiftly after the interval before scoring again in the second half to make it 3-0 against a tiring Magpies side.

With 15 minutes left to play, Alan Devonshire’s men got a goal back through substitute Shawn McCoulsky but their opponents were resilient to secure the three points.

As a result, Maidenhead slip to 18th, a point from their target of 50 with three games left to play, starting with Oldham Athletic on Saturday (April 15).

However, it’s quite unlikely that they will go down this season – especially after Scunthorpe United’s relegation was confirmed this afternoon thanks to a 2-0 defeat against Latics.

Torquay had their first corner within five minutes and in blustery conditions, Alexis Andre Jr had to be on his toes at the back post.

The Gulls went close from another corner on the 10th minute when Jack Stobbs’ delivery was flicked on and captain Asa Hall fired the effort goalbound.

Remy Clerima was the man to deny the ball from crashing the back of the net with many fans and players believing the Frenchman had used his hands.

Nevertheless, Emile Acquah had the ball at his feet down the other end just moments later, taking it round Mark Halstead with ease but, from a tight angle, Torquay were

able to clear their lines.

A goalline clearance from Lewis Collins denied Ashley Nathaniel-George from wheeling off in celebration in the 15th minute, before former Magpie Shaun Donnellan picked up the first yellow card of the game.

Ultimately, it was Torquay who went on to open the scoring and it happened just before the break.

From the right flank, Stobbs crossed the ball superbly into the box and Jarvis emphatically nodded it in to make it 1-0 at half time.

Gary Johnson’s side were able to double their advantage just two minutes into the restart as Nouble chased down a long ball and calmly lobbed it over an onrushing Andre

Jr.

Opposing stopper Halstead was quick off his line after the hour mark but gathered the ball adeptly when Nathaniel-George was fed through by McCoulsky.

It was 3-0 in the 71st minute when Nouble helped himself to another goal – a lowdriven effort which ricocheted over the line.

McCoulsky gave the Magpies’ supporters and staff some optimism when he scored a cool finish in the 75th minute, assisted by fellow substitute Sam Barratt.

But the Gulls, shrewd in their game management, held firm until the referee blew for full-time.
