Galloper joins sculpture trail
Waterside: Animal artworks honour Maidenhead history
Shanly Homes and Sorbon Estates unveiled a traditional fairground horse sculpture at Waterside Quarter at the weekend.
This marks the completion of the Maidenhead Memories sculpture trail, designed by Gordon Young and already featuring a lion, alligator, toucan, bats, stag and pig.
These are there to celebrate moments in Maidenhead’s history:
W Sir Nicholas Winton's Order of the White Lion, the Czech Republic’s highest honour
W Actress Diana Dors’ film An Alligator Named Daisy
W The town centre’s famous toucan café
W The Count Dracula films made at Bray Studios
W A 15th century stag chased by hunters from the Royal household who met in Maidenhead every Easter
W A renowned, award-winning pig farm
W Finally, a galloper carousel horse celebrating Carters Steam Fair
The day was marked with funfair games in honour of the fairground theme.
To coincide with this, a unique artwork by Maidenhead-based architectural
glass artist Kirsty Brooks was also unveiled.
It is a digitally collaged design that draws on Kirsty’s perceptions of Maidenhead’s history.
Using archive photographs and slides from the 1960s-1980s, it adorns two large windows by the pig sculpture.
Kirsty said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to create an artwork for Waterside Quarter and to have the artistic freedom to create a homage to my hometown.
“My aim was to create something layered and magical for local residents and the vibrant community of Maidenhead to enjoy.
“Having grown up here, I have been able to channel my knowledge of the town in all its glory alongside its special quirks.
“Maidenhead has beautiful hidden qualities which are now being enhanced and I cannot wait to see the town continue to flourish.”
