Support for dementia charity was stopped

-

After 12 years representing Bray ward, I decided not to stand again this year to give me time to follow other interests.

In cabinet I twice took responsibility for adult services which I really enjoyed.

To be able to help residents especially the older generation was a great privilege. During the first period I learnt so much about how the borough supports those who are less fortunate especially those with Alzheimer’s.

I soon came across a local charity called Alzheimer’s Dementia Support or just ADS. Many of you will know it from its annual Santa Run at the Eton rowing lake even if you have not come across their services.

You may also know the shop in Maidenhead High Street.

ADS was started by a local man who was committed to helping people but unlike the national charities, without fancy offices and company cars.

It has been unbelievably successful thanks to a small team of dedicated staff who run the services.

The charity provides this service hence saving RBWM ratepayers money although the borough have always provided a small but essential grant.

This year I was asked to take back responsibility for adult services and soon found out that RBWM had stopped the grant for this year.

I tried to reverse this decision, but it was too late.

The cost pressures on adult services are extremely high and this charity saves the Borough money.

I have decided to support ADS by becoming a trustee /director and I am now meeting the team and the people we suppor t.

Through this column I would like to ask

Cllr Simon Werner and his new team to reinstate this grant to show that they support this fantastic local charity and the residents.
