Book swaps, author talks and reading challenges took place across Maidenhead schools to mark World Book Day last week.

Youngsters dressed up as their favourite book characters and took part in a series of creative events on Friday, March 8 to celebrate reading.

Oldfield Primary School hosted its first ‘Great Book Swap’ and classroom doors were turned into ‘book covers’ displaying the children’s artwork and photos.

Assistant headteacher and reading lead Amelia Goodson-Smith said: “Children at Oldfield have thoroughly enjoyed World Book Day. It has been wonderful to see the children so passionate about reading in and around the school.”

She said the children enjoyed swapping books and worked on reading-related activities including book quizzes, writing to local authors and turning picture books into comics.

In the lead-up to World Book Day, Oldfield also hosted author talks for each year group, a book cover design competition and a visit from the travelling book fair.

Head of Alwyn Infant School Kirsty Grierson said their pupils are taking part in a 30-day reading challenge to encourage reading at home.

“Staff were proud of the effort our children made to use books rather than media shows as inspiration and were surprised by the variety of characters. Our children are also taking part in a 30-day reading challenge to encourage reading at home.”

Consulting headteacher at All Saints Junior School, Rob Harris, said pupils had a visit from author Kate Poels and took part in ‘wonderful’ book-related activities.

He said: “The children were invited to take part in a competition to decorate a potato as their favourite book character. Their designs were creative and
