Big kick-off for Subbuteo fair
In a new addition to our popular Remember When feature, we take a step into the new millennium to see what was making headlines five, 10 and 15 years ago this week.
2009: The first bricks of a special classroom were put in place by Lowbrook pupils.
The excited primary school pupils donned safety hats as the bricks were cemented in for the £500,000 eco-classroom, which was due to provide space for a new class to start the following year.
2009: Tiny sportsmen were dusted off when Subbuteo fever came to town.
The golden days of the table-top game were revived at Boyne Hill Cricket Club by Maidonian Jon Rosten, who hosted a Subbuteo Fair.
About 100 people turned out throughout the day to buy, sell, or just play the game.
2009: Pupils at Holy Trinity Primary School in
Cookham made non-alcoholic cocktails to help raise £1,500 for charity.
About 200 pupils at the school took part in a number of activities for Comic Relief.
This included selling red noses, throwing wet sponges at one another and making mocktails.
2014: A battle of wits to raise money for charity attracted more than 300 people to the Holiday Inn in Maidenhead.
A total of 36 teams from across the area were competing for the Thames Valley Pub Quiz Trophy as part of an annual event organised by the Rotary Club of Maidenhead Thames.
Goodies star Tim BrookeTaylor was the quizmaster.
2014: The walls of The Rendezvous Cafe were brought to life by the work of 124 Studios.
It was the first time the group of eight artists had displayed their work at the cafe in the town hall, and the exhibition included a visual manifesto putting forward the artists’ search for a permanent studio space.
2019: Campaigners inspired by young people who marched for politicians to take action on climate change gathered for a town hall demonstration.
Fifteen adults and their children took part to show support for those who took part in the Youth Strike 4 Climate events across the world.
