Last-gasp Ajibola goal revives Holyport hopes

-

Holyport revived their hopes of a Combined Counties Premier Division North play-off finish with a last-gasp 2-1 win at Wembley on Saturday.

With matches running out, Sam Lock's side have probably given themselves too much to do to make up the ground for a top five finish, however, Saturday's result moves them to within seven points of fifth-placed Egham. They also have matches in hand on several of the teams above them. One of those games will have to be rearranged after a waterlogged pitch led to Tuesday's game with Risborough Rangers being postponed. This Saturday they're set to visit local rivals Burnham.

The Blues didn't play at the weekend but remain fourth with a three-point gap to

Egham Town below them. They also have matches in hand on most of their play-off rivals and could well catch third placed Bedfont Sports if they continue their recent form.

Holyport grabbed their 10th win of the season with a 95th minute at Wembley on Saturday, Rahman Ajibola showing incredible composure to slot through the keeper's legs in the dying embers of the game. The visitors had to come from behind to claim all three points with Wembley taking the lead in the 21st minute.

Port were more than in the game, though with Kickie Dzimba going close just a few minutes later. There was an element of fortune to their 61st minute equaliser when Josh Addae's cross come shot looped home. The action continued to sweep from one end to the other, with North making one crucial save, but Port saved their best for last with Ajibola running through to slot home clinically.

The goal scorers spoke to the club after the final whistle. Ajibola said:

“I'm buzzing. I wasn't happy to not start but I came on and I didn't think I played too well until I scored, but I was happy, through on goal. The keeper closed my angles, I was going to try and take it around him, but I saw his legs open, little nutmeg, 2-1.

“We haven't done very well in our last three games, so to come here and win, we got back to 1-1 thanks to Josh and I scored the winner. We'll try to carry this momentum on to Tuesday and see what we can do.

On his equaliser, Josh added: “It was a goal. A couple of people have been saying to me it was a cross, it wasn't that. It's a good win away from home and I felt that we deserved to win for our second half performance.

“It's another stepping stone towards trying to get promotion.

“We want another win on Tuesday. Now that we have this momentum, we'll go into Tuesday's game all guns blazing. That loss on Tuesday was what we needed to reset and come back to where we are now.”
