Melodic rock and pop band The Colour Tree were voted winners in the first round of Maidenhead Fringe Festival’s Battle of the Bands on Friday night.

Their victory secures them a slot supporting one of the headline acts at the main Maidenhead Festival in Kidwells Park on July 20-21.

Friday’s Battle of the Bands kicked off this year’s Fringe Festival, which showcases live music at venues across the town centre in the run-up to the festival weekend.

Held at a packed-out

Potion and Motion in King Street, the event featured five groups including new Maidenhead covers band Millennium, Thatchambased rockers Juliette the Band, Newbury’s Violet Origin, and Gods to Ghosts from Guildford.

Festival chairman Lisa Hunter said: “It was a fantastic night of live music. All the bands were brilliant and Potion and Motion was packed with people dancing. It was a tough competition but our panel of judges and audience vote singled out The Colour Tree as clear winners.

“They and the winners of the second round of the competition will support our headline acts on the Saturday and Sunday night concerts at Maidenhead Festival in July.”

Places are still available for the second round of Battle of the Bands on Friday, May 10. A separate contest will be held for acoustic acts, with the winner and runner-up securing slots to perform on the Festival’s main stage during the weekend.
