- PAUL WILDE

CLAYTON ATMOSPHERE A READER writes: Sir - Will you kindly allow me to draw attention of the authorities to the awful stench which has for the past two or three nights permeated the atmosphere of the Clayton district? Everyone who passes asks, “What is it?”, WHILE working over at Stockport a couple years back I drove into Offerton onto Turncroft Lane. The road registered with me immediately as the place where the Palace Theatre Club had once stood, playing host to movies, variety acts and pop groups during its time. The biggest of the bands were The Beatles who performed there on June 13, 1963.

It’s a shame that such an important landmark is no longer with us as I find it’s fondly remembered when people relate to their favourite clubs around Greater Manchester.

I was told that the Offerton Palace started life as the Curzon Picture House bringing you the big films of the day, Pathe News and a ‘B’ movie giving you your money’s worth.

However, at some point it was converted into a club, and by 1963 the Pete Marsh Trio held residency every Thursday night entertaining with hit cover versions of the day. And one of the early comperes was a Johnny More who later made a television impact as an impressionist on Who Do You Do?

The club owner was Sid Elgar who also owned the Southern Sporting club in Gorton, which will explain why The Beatles played this club on the same day as the Palace, making it a rare double header.

Along with the Fab Four, other big names graced the venue such as Gene Vincent, Dusty Springfield, Johnny Ray and Gerry and the Pacemakers.

According to one punter the Palace offered a great night out with top acts, which would cost three shillings and six pence that’s 17p today!

It’s also interesting to learn that a series by the BBC called Club Night was filmed at the venue. I have tried to find out more but was unable to uncober anything. Perhaps someone out there can shed some light, and maybe provide some memories of the Palace or Southern Sporting Club?

I feel there’s more to learn – a blue plaque may be in order! What do you think?
