Leigh chairman disappointed with side’s capital punishment

- Neil Barker

LEIGH chairman Derek Beaumont certainly was not in the mood for hot chocolate ahead of a long drive home after seeing his side bucked by the London Broncos 29-20.

A disappointed Derek needed a stiffer drink.

The Centurions’ unbeaten 27-match run went out of the window the day after Derek was rolling with laughter watching the musical Willy Wonka with his family and friends in London.

Leigh were fully expected to win in the capital but it was not to be despite tries from Pownall, Armstrong and McNally.

It was one of those bad days at the office for Paul Rowley’s side who trailed at the break and for once, could not fight back.

Lacking both Gareth Hock and Fuifui Moimoi, Leigh came down to earth with a bang. They must now regroup in readiness for the forthcoming Challenge Cup clash with Warrington later this month.

Elsewhere in the Championship, John Duffy’s Swinton march on thanks to another fine win. They beat Newcastle 44-22.

Ben White and Chris Rothwell led the way with two tries each for the Lions.

Swinton started strongly, playing a good brand of fine rugby that is delighted the fans.

They led 22-8 at the break and climb the table.

Rochdale Hornets were expecting a tough game at York and got it losing 34-20.

Ian Talbot’s men were flying high but missed too many chances.

Trumper, Yates, Ashworth and Dawson scored tries.

Oldham were again frustrated at home, going down 38-28 to the North Wales Crusaders.

Lewis Palfrey was again among the tries for the Roughyeds but it was another setback at White Bank for Scott Naylor’s men. Josh Crowley. Jack Holmes and Oliver Roberts also added tries.

Meanwhile, Warrington Wolves have seemingly pipped Wigan to sign Hull winger Tom Lineham for next season.

Dan Sarginson, the Wigan centre, is again said to be attracting interest from the NRL according to the Sydney media.

Wigan have been tentatively linked with the Wolves long-serving centre Chris Bridge should a squad shake up take place at the Halliwell Jones at the end of the year.

Wolves are among the Super League clubs monitoring Salford’s Cory Paterson.
