SLOW DOWN... AND SAVE LIVES

-

FOOTAGE showing the moment eightyear-old Billy Arrow-Smith was hit by a car is truly shocking. Billy was playing on his bike on Arthur Avenue, in Walkden, when he was hit by a car - an accident which could have happened to any youngster.

But neighbours on the avenue say it is all too common an occurrence and are calling on Salford council to introduce traffic calming measures to prevent further accidents.

The moment Billy was hit was caught on CCTV and the footage has been shown to local kids to warn them about the dangers of being on the roads.

Mums on the street say five children have been knocked down in the area in recent years, which shows the dangers we can encounter on Greater Manchester’s roads every day.

And though 20mph zones have been introduced across many residential roads, it only takes a second for disaster to happen.

That’s why we support the residents’ attempts to introduce traffic calming measures on their avenue. Measures such as this will never completely eradicate accidents, but if just one life can be saved in this way then surely it is worth it?
