ALABOURER is set to take on the ‘toughest endurance course on the planet’ three times in one day in memory of his late brother.

Courageous Dean Kelly, 27, will attempt to complete a triple Tough Mudder tomorrow for his ‘best friend’ and brother Leon, who died of cystic fibrosis last year aged just 23.

Dean, from Outwood Road, Heald Green, will be taking on the fearsome 12-mile course to raise

Dean Kelly with his late brother Leon funds for Wythenshawe Hospital’s cystic fibrosis unit, which cared for Leon before his death. Designed by the army’s special forces, Tough Mudder pushes participants to the limit by pitting them against a series of chal- lenges including plunging into ice baths and scaling 10ft walls.

Dean said: “Leon was my brother and my best friend and we were very close. When he died I was devastated.

“I was in Florida when we found out he was ill. We got the first flight we could back to the UK. I spoke to Leon on the phone but I didn’t get to see him before he passed away. It was heartbreaking. I decided I wanted to do something in his memory, and he got such good care at Wythenshawe it was a no-brainer who I should support.”

Dean, who will compete in Tough Mudder’s Skipton event, will set off for the first time at 8am, and then again at 11am and 1pm.

He said: “It’s not going to be easy that’s for sure, I have done Tough Mudder before but went around just once - the course is designed to be the ultimate test of strength, stamina and mental grit. But knowing that I am doing something in Leon’s memory will make it seem a lot easier than it probably will be.”
