Common? It’s all the fault of Coronation St!

IT is really Coronation Street which dictates the country’s perception of the Manchester/ Lancashire accent as ‘common’.

This show is on five times a week in prime time. It presents the characters as unhappy. If someone is more unhappy than you, you are better off than them and superior to them.

This feeling of superiority is why the show is so popular. I think north west MPs should campaign for Coronation Street to be cancelled.

With that accent, Andy Burnham will never be taken seriously in a position of authority otherwise. James Manchester

No joke in red hair

AS someone with red hair I have received abuse all my life.

It can seriously affect your confidence as an adult or a child and how you see yourself.

I was happy to see your recent article surrounding this issue and how the police don’t take this type of discrimination seriously, as people with red hair make up a tiny percentage of the general population.

I was disappointed to read in your article, however, you making reference to Paul Scholes as ‘Ginger Ninja’.

This undermined your entire article as you yourselves could not resist making a joke at his expense.

Not everyone is a multi-millionaire footballer and so has the confidence of Mr Scholes. I am sure if he was a teenager with low self-esteem he may feel differently. Gary Donaghy

Have say at meeting

ON Wednesday, August 12, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm in The Royal Oak Public House, Shawcroft Close, I will be attending with my colleagues the public exhibition about the future proposals for Cowlishaw abattoir.

I am really pleased that following on from a recent meeting with the planners, they agreed to our suggestion to hold a second consultation event. I urge local residents who will be affected by the proposed plans to attend so that they can again put forward any concerns they may have.

The previous proposals were for either the expansion of the existing abattoir or a possible housing development with the gifting of a country park.

The planner’s new proposals now include the removal of the abattoir and the development of part of the site for housing. The amended plans take into account concerns made about the country park, which has now been removed from the scheme. Diane Williamson Liberal Democrat Crompton councillor

Wrong over chief

IT is wrong for a member of parliament to criticise the chief constable of GMP, who is honest and the most experienced police officer in England and Wales today.

Due to financial cuts, they cannot investigate 60 per cent of the reported crime.

The police lack training, manpower and new technology to fight crime in the 21st century. In male prisons, 60 per cent of prisoners are either suffering from attentionseeking illnesses or are victims of these suffering from it, hence the concern of the learned chief constable to resolve these problems.
