Warriors fight off a late charge from Giants

WIGAN...................... 32 HUDDERSFIELD ..... 22

WIGAN assistant coach John Winder hailed the maturity of stand-off George Williams and the work rate of Liam Farrell as the Warriors fought back to earn a 30-22 Super 8s victory over Huddersfield at the DW Stadium.

The Warriors recovered from 10-0 down after just 12 minutes and, after going in just four points behind at the break, took the game to the Giants.

Two tries in the space of two minutes, with Williams creating one and finishing another, saw the Warriors lead 18-10 and although they never let go of that lead again they were still pushed all the way and were made to work hard for victory after Eorl Crabtree had given the visitors hope with a late try.

Williams, who has been criticised in some quarters for his erratic form this season, combined well with Farrell and they were the two standout players at the DW Stadium.

Winder said: “We probably didn’t start as well as we wanted to and Huddersfield were good in that first 20 minutes and got out to a 10-0 lead. We had to show some character to get back into the game. We were under the pump from the minute go.

“I thought young George showed some maturity in the game and came up with some big individual plays and I though Liam Farrell was very good, he had some good touches and looked a class second rower. His work rate was outstanding as well.”
