PATIENTS and visitors at Salford Royal Hospital were forced to dive for cover as an out-of-control car careered through the grounds.

Travelling around 500m from a car park near the hospital’s Ladywell Building, the VW Tiguan ploughed through bollards, barriers, hedges and a covered walkway before coming to rest just a few feet from the hospital’s Hope Building.

Witnesses described fleeing as the vehicle hurtled past leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Onlookers said it was travelling so quickly that at one stage its wheels left the ground as it smashed over the obstacles.

Nobody other than the driver was hurt and she is understood to be in a stable condition after firefighters cut her from the crumpled car.

One witness said: “We don’t understand how nobody was hit. The driver travelled so far and the car was actually in the air before it landed.”

Another added: “The car is an absolute mess. She was in the top end of the car park and it just carried on going. She has had a nasty crash. There are lots of police and ambulances.

“You could see the airbag out in the car.

“My mother was in a wheelchair with a porter. She said if she had not stopped to light a smoke, it would have taken her out.”

The daughter of a 73-year-old pensioner said her mun had to dive out of the way, adding: “She was coming back with a porter after having an x-ray and saw the car crash through the barriers and hit a few cars.”

Emergency services were called to Stott Lane in Pendleton just after 10.20am yesterday.

In the aftermath of the crash, the car’s path could be traced by bent bollards around the main visitor car park, dented gates – and workmen who had moved in to fix the battered walkway canopy.

Police inspected the car once the driver had been removed for treatment

A spokeswoman for Salford Royal Hospital said: “We can confirm that there has been an incident involving a car at Salford Royal Hospital.

“The driver has been taken into A&E for checks and we are very thankful that no else was injured.”
