DETECTIVES are investigating why a hooded gunman fired five shots at a house while a mum and her young child were inside.

Three of the bullets smashed through the ground-floor living room window and the others are believed to have lodged in brickwork or the window frame.

Detectives described the earlyhours shooting on Sutton Road in Gorton as a ‘targeted attack’ and said police patrols have been stepped up in the area as a result.

The woman, 28, and her child have been moved out. No exact age or sex of the youngster has been revealed.

Police chiefs said they were left ‘extremely shaken’ but unhurt.

A motive for the attack, and whether the woman or an associate of her’s was the target, is being investigated, alongside possible links to Manchester’s criminal underworld.

Neighbours on the quiet road off Mount Road told how they heard a series of ‘loud pops’ like fireworks before armed response officers arrived at the scene at around 12.20am yesterday.

Detectives have issued an appeal for witnesses and information and said the gunman, described only as being a ‘hooded man’, drove on to the street in a silver Volkswagen Golf car

Police said he got out of the car and fired off five shots from a handgun before speeding off. It’s not known whether he was alone or with anyone else.

CCTV cameras positioned nearby are being examined.

Det Insp Muz Kernain said: “This is a serious incident that will under- standably cause concern in the area. We believe that this was a targeted attack that poses no threat to the wider community and we have increased patrols in response. A mother and child have been left extremely shaken by this traumatic ordeal and it is fortunate that neither of them were injured. I would urge anyone who saw anything that can help our investigation to contact us.”

Search teams and forensic officers were at the scene throughout yesterday. A section of the road covering 10 semi-detached homes was sealed off

Call police on 101 with any information about the incident.
