Chef has recipe to help homeless across the city
A FORMER cruise liner chef is planning to write a recipe book of Mancunian favourites to raise cash for the homeless – and he needs your help.
Noel Goulding prepared banquets for the super rich on the Queen Elizabeth 2. But recently he has been making meals for rough sleepers.
Noel has put in regular shifts for free at Loaves and Fishes in Salford, a drop-in centre for disadvantaged and homeless people in the city.
Now the centre, which is due to move from temporary accommodation in Mona Street, needs cash for a new kitchen.
Noel is planning to create a new cook book to help the charity, filled with Manchester and Salford recipes. He is asking M.E.N. readers for ideas – from childhood classics to modern favourites.
“I am appealing for help to find recipes from the two cities,” Noel said. “We need recipes, especially if they have a story. We want great, well-tried recipes.
“All the money raised will go towards the cost of a new kitchen for Loaves and Fishes when it moves to new premises.
“They do a fantastic job for the homeless, a crisis which shows no sign of disappearing. The recipes can have their roots in the Manchester area, or be from people’s memories from growing up in the area.
“My favourite dish is the Irish stew that my mother, Elizabeth, from Dublin, used to make me as a child in Cheetham Hill back in the 1960s.”
Noel and friend, restauranteur, Steve Pilling, have worked with Salford young people and the unemployed for the past 20 years helping them get work in the catering industry. Noel said: “Steve and I have been asked to help Loves and Fishes, as they didn’t have a head chef and needed support to build their new kitchen. I came on board to cook to lead the team of volunteers with training, encouragement and menu planning. We will develop a cookbook, publish it, and sell it in lots of the usual ways.” Send your ideas – and the reasons for them – to neal.keeling@ men-news.co.uk. The M.E.N has pledged to support and publicise the Manchester Homelessness Charter at appropriate opportunities.
