KEANE: I CRINGE AT REDS BEING HAPPY TO MAKE TOP FOUR
KEANO: ‘I CRINGE AT REDS FIGHTING TO MAKE TOP FOUR’
UNITED legend Roy Keane says his former club should be ashamed of only fighting for a top four place.
The Reds sit fifth in the Premier League table, a point behind City in fourth, leaving them scrapping to make Champions League qualification for next season.
Jose Mourinho’s side have the avenue of winning the Europa League to confirm their return to Europe’s top table next season, but United’s former skipper is embarrassed by their predicament.
“When I see clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United celebrating getting into the top four, I cringe at it, I really do.”
Speaking at a Show Racism the Red Card event he added: “Any of these big clubs – do you think that Real Madrid and Barcelona would be celebrating getting fourth? Come on, get a grip.
“It is about getting your hands on a trophy.
“People talk about getting into the top four because of the financial rewards and it was great for teams like Leicester to qualify but for the big teams, Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal, celebrating fourth? I say shame on you.”
In previous seasons Arsenal and their fans have been mocked for treating fourth place like a trophy but United find themselves in that position this season as they try to get back into the Champions League.
City and Liverpool, fourth and third respectively, currently occupy the final two qualification spots though United have a game in hand on the Anfield club, who are four points better off.
