ILKAY Gundogan was hard at work at City’s training ground last week as he bids to be fit for the start of pre-season.

After a brief break after the end of the season, the German international went back to the City Football Academy while his team-mates jetted off on holiday or linked up with their international squads.

Gundogan’s work paid off as he was pictured taking part in a light training session, going through footwork and dribbling skills with members of the medical staff.

Having not played for the team since mid-December when he suffered cruciate ligament damage in his knee, the 26-year-old is looking to play a key part in pre-season.

City will be playing three games next month as part of their preparations for next season, taking on United, Tottenham and Real Madrid in the US.

Gundogan could be asked to play a different role in the team when he returns to the picture. He was predominantly used as an attacking player in his first campaign for the club, rotating with Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva.

But new signing Bernardo Silva has been told by Pep Guardiola that he will sometimes be used there, which could force Gundogan further back.

Having trained last week at the CFA, the midfielder is now enjoying a break in LA as he rests up ahead of the pre-season tour.
