A MAN was rushed to a police station by a terrified member of the public after he was stabbed on a major road into Manchester city centre.

The man was driving on Oldham Road through Newton Heath when his blue Peugeot was hit from behind by a red Audi at around 1.30pm on Wednesday.

Following the collision, a man got out of the Audi and pointed a gun at the Peugeot driver, who ran off and got into a stranger’s van.

As the van made its way along The Gateway, away from Oldham Road, the vehicle was rammed by a white Volkswagen Golf. The people in the Golf then dragged the Peugeot driver from the van and knifed him repeatedly in the legs before fleeing.

The injured man was taken to nearby Central Park Police Station, on Northampton Road, by the van driver.

Officers and paramedics rushed to help him before he was taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

The man’s blue Peugeot was later recovered by officers. The red Audi was found abandoned.

Large cordons were put in place along Oldham Road, The Gateway and Northampton Road in the aftermath of the incident as an investigation was launched.

The police station, across the road from GMP headquarters, was also taped off.

An officer wearing forensic gloves was seen examining the van.

A witness who saw the collision and the altercation - said the man collapsed after being set upon before being put back in the van.

Det Chf Insp Paul Walker, of GMP’s City of Manchester Team, said: “This is an absolutely terrifying sequence of events, which must have been extremely frightening for other motorists and people who were in the area at the time - especially for the member of the public who took the man to the police station.

“I want to make it clear that any reports of gun crime will be taken very seriously and those who parade these deadly weapons will be actively sought after and made to answer for their crimes.

“At the time this incident happened, there were a lot of people in the area, some of which have thankfully already been in contact with us, but we still need others who witnessed it get in touch to help us build a clearer picture.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference number 988 of August 16, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
