UNITED legend Sir Alex Ferguson has sent boxer Hughie Fury an inspiring letter as he gears up for his world heavyweight showdown with Joseph Parker.

And the gesture has left the fighting Reds fan ‘humbled’.

Fury – cousin of former world champion Tyson Fury – will take on the Kiwi at the Manchester Arena on September 23.

And Fergie is right behind him ahead of the WBO title decider.

He wrote to the Greater Manchester-based slugger before the fight’s original scheduled date in May to tell him: “Having spoken to one of my old players Frank ‘The King’ McDougall who speaks so highly of you and your admiration of myself and United I felt I should write to you and wish you well with your big fight coming up.

“I really do hope you win against your opponent Joseph Parker when you contest the WBO Heavy Weight Championship.

“I always said to our players before big games ‘play the game not the occasion’ so remember to concentrate on that aspect of the fight.

“You are there to win and not to revel in the occasion so make sure your concentration is only on the fight, forget everything around you, your focus has to be in the ring.”

Fergie signed off by saying: “Good luck Hughie, I’ll be rooting for you!”

Fury tweeted a picture of the letter and thanked Sir Alex, who retired as United boss in 2013 after winning his 13th Premier League title. Fury wrote: “Thank you to Sir Alex Ferguson for this. Truly humbled.”

He was due to face champion Parker as the mandatory challenger in New Zealand earlier this year but pulled out with a back injury.

The fight has been rescheduled for the Arena and Fury is in bullish mood.

“I’ve never had a close fight,” he said. “I’ve won every round of every single fight.

“I’m going to let my fists do the talking and I’m going to take his belt home with me.”
