Barca boss says United target is part of his plans
BARCELONA manager Ernesto Valverde insists he is relying on Sergi Roberto to be an important member of his squad this season, amid speculation that United are interested in making him their fourth signing of the summer.
The 25-year-old has a reported £36m release clause, which is said to be interesting clubs across the continent.
There is nothing to indicate that United have any concrete interest in the Spanish international, who is reportedly concerned that the signing of Paulinho will inhibit his playing time.
But that has not stopped multiple online reports linking him with a move to Old Trafford.
The La Masia graduate has a contract with Barcelona until 2019 and is due an improved extension.
Barcelona are adamant that he won’t be sold this summer – even if Valverde admitted he will not always start the most important fixtures.
Valverde told Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo: “Of course, I am absolutely counting on him.”
“In some games he will be a major player and in some games no, but he remains an important player.”
After adding Nemanja Matic to the ranks this summer, midfield is not a priority for United and there is no suggestion that they are monitoring Roberto’s situation.
However, the Reds remain in the market for a wide player and have been linked with Ivan Perisic, Gareth Bale and Danny Rose.
