Latics takeover could be done in weeks

- FOOTBALL BY MATT CHAMBERS @MENSports

OLDHAM Athletic’s takeover could be completed by the end of this month.

That’s the target that the club are working to, as Abdallah Lemsagam aims to acquire the entirety of current owner Simon Corney’s shares.

Legal teams have been working through the paperwork as the Moroccan former agent seeks to take control.

The FA have also been supplied with the information they have requested on the takeover and Oldham await the governing body’s green light.

Chief executive Mark Moisley admits that it’s a case of the sooner the better for the deal to be completed. And confirmation of Lemsagam coming in could serve to boost the chances of keeping on top-performing loan players Jack Byrne and Eoin Doyle beyond January.

“It is going through and things have moved on,” Moisley told M.E.N. Sport.

“We have been going through the disclosure and that has all been taken care of now. The legal team we have been working with have supplied everything that has been asked for.

“Essentially, we are still in the hands of the league. The lawyers side of things have moved forward well and it’s progressing nicely.

“The time frame that was mentioned to me was the end of November and they are still hopeful that could be the case.

“It would mean we know where we are. We are a little bit in limbo at the moment and you wouldn’t want that to carry on for too long.”

Moisley says that Corney, who is a friend of Lemsagam’s, is likely to remain at the club initially once he sells his 97 per cent stake in the club, with fan group Trust Oldham retaining their 3pc share.

“It’s been discussed and the prospective owner would like Simon to be involved in the short-term to utilise his knowledge and experience,” Moisley added. “But certainly, in the medium-to-longer term he is selling and that would be the end of his involvement.”

Meanwhile, Oldham’s reserves drew 2-2 at Burnley in a behindclosed-doors match. Courtney Duffus and Darius Osei netted for the visitors.
